    I'm thinking Italian - something about the scabbard, the blade shape [Carcano] and the blade marking. Never seen a brass hilt like that.

    Having just moved house, all my books are still packed away otherwise I would probably be able to find more.

    [edit] ... must improve typing speed ... beaten to it by Ade !

    Italian M1871/87/16 Brass grips-made during WW1 to fit old Vetterli Vitali M1870 rifles-has features of the then current M1891 Carcano bayonet such as the cross bar instead of the earlier hooked quillon of the older pattern bayos.

    To know for sure if Vetterli or for modello1891 you have to give us the inside dimensions of the ring.
    The blade and scabbard are the 1891 Carcano.

    I believe lithgow is correct the ring is low for a M1891 Carcano, and too large, its a rare ersatz version of Vetterli bayonet.
