Default Identifying regiment mark on 1907 bayonet

    Hello everyone,

I need help identifying the regimental mark on this 1915 Enfield 1907 bayonet. The pommel is marked 388 over MR over 72. I bought it from the UK and the seller indicated it was the New Zealand Mounted Rifles but I have my doubts as there is no NZ stamp anywhere. Any ideas appreciated.

    Thanks
    Alex

I doubt it Alex. There were 4 NZMR regiments and 12 squadrons. The 72 doesn't fit, and as you point out no NZ mark. The arrangement looks British not New Zealand.

I got it from a dealer who I've used plenty of times and never had a drama. The photos weren't clear and he wrote the description as 3/8 MR 72 for 3rd regiment 8th squadron. When it arrived I clearly saw 388 not 3/8 and no NZ mark. I'm going to put it down to bad eye site rather than deliberately misleading. Its not a bad 1907 example and didn't cost a fortune but without the NZ connection I would have passed on it. Hopefully someone can ID it so I at least know what I've got.

Did you end up finding the part you were looking for?

I did. The Queensland dealer unfortunately didn't do overseas orders and had the part. But I managed to get the swivel loop locally in the end.

When look at pommel markings it doesnt have a size of typical british units, but could be as mentioned a NZ oddity, anyway there is doubble struck 8 so in reality 3 8 MR 72 could be 3/8 as mentioned 72 could be weapon nr. or the piece was used by other units.
