excellent photo's sorry got to ask but what happened to original awards???
the original awards were deamed illegal hence the law against displaying the swastika in germany so in 1957 the bundeswehr decided to create the same medals but without the swastika these were issued to all service personal who had gained them during ww2
tom
yes i no that tom!!! but?? were they destroyed or did some one realise one day they would be worth a fortune??
martinc...I would think that most were either disgarded or "liberated"....however senior Officers, I guess had a second set at home for formal occasions/official parades...these got passed down, and in time a lot of decendants sold them on... Tom, 1957 awards, were never reissued...the 1957 regulations laid down the specifications and types of awards that could be worn (political/flower wars were not allowed in any form) anyone could in theory purchase these awards, but only those entitled could wear them...they were purchased at the wearers expense. This is a great thread, well done Tom !
Prost ! Steve.
I really like the 'then and now' comparison photos.
I also think a lot of original TR awards were:
A) Buried in backyards
B) Stored away in trunks
C) Sold
D) Tossed into creeks/rivers/lakes
E) Burned
F) Traded for food/cigarettes
G) Taken to North America as war souvenirs..........

Steve.
Gents, a rather odd photograph obviously taken after 1957...General Hans von Donat, in a studio pose wearing his Third Reich period uniform ! with a 1957 ribbon bar attached. Prost ! Steve.
