Gentlemen, I post for reference, a NCO's rank and chevron table for the Bundeswehr pre 1963, in this year on the ranks would be (officially) shown only on the shoulder boards, arm chevrons were to be dropped, but they continued to be worn well into the late 60's, usually by men promoted prior to this change upto the end of their contracted period of service. It was in 1963 that shoulder boards changed from pointed ends to round ends.

Gents, another couple of Army rank tables, this time a little easier to read......and show the coloured litzen "slip ons" that are used over the base of the shoulder strap on camo tunics to show which arm of service the wearer is from.
    Prost ! Steve.

James, you have a left shoulder strap slip on or rank loop in Oliv for the rank of "Obergefreiter"....these were worn on both shoulder straps and are mirror image, hence the slope being the opposite to the chart above ! first worn around 1962/3 replacing the arm chevrons on field and fatigue uniforms including shirts/parkas and specialist uniforms, and ONLY on Oliv, flecktarn and tropentarn items of clothing.................still worn today. The earliest types had Altgold coloured insignia, then either white/silver or black(subdued) insignia either printed or embroidered, Oliv ones are often seen on Flecktarn cammo jackets !
However they can be roughly dated as old and new types, especially Officers slip on's......the embroidered rank devices differing in size and appearance, smaller on new style...also old style slip ons often had a hook attached to secure on the strap and prevent slipping, this old & new style also accounts for different manufacturing techniques found on these rank slip on's....such as different weaved cloth used front and back, as newer types tend to show the same material front & back.
I think the older style were used between the early 1960's thro to the early 1980's, and the later style to date....... there were also velcro backed rank badges used on specialist uniforms such as the ABC suits/body armour vests, these would be attached to either both arms or front of the item of clothing.....see these images of such slips/loops in my collection.
Hope this has helped, Prost ! Steve.

steve that is absolutely brilliantand to even tell it came off the left shoulder ,i knew you were the best bloke to ask ,its facinating to see the small hook attachment on yours ,ive just noticed a small hole on both sides of the cloth and i wonder if damaged by a removed hook ,thanks also for the identifiying the rank ,having just looked again over your great guide i now see it there plain as day, ,here's a close up of the damage ,thanks again jamesBundeswehr ranks.
