Sadly mate, I think your brother is going to be very disappointed...
I thought the same thing when I was looking at it I did not think it looked correct
Can you please give me some ideas so he can go back to dealer he paid $3800
Hi Mate, would there be any chance of finding out who this dealer is?
Regards
Brett
Original white caps are extremely rare - there are only a few known examples around. I don't know for which organisation this cap was made (it looks professionally made) but certainly not for the SS. Piping, visor/peak, shape, fabric are far away from these.
There is a real one here (post # 14):
SS visor cap

I certainly hope he can get his money back.
That said, the price alone at AUD $3.8k (or even USD $3.8k) is the first warning sign. A cap like this would be worth multiples of this price.
"Please", Thank You" and proper manners appreciated
My greatest fear is that one day I will die and my wife will sell my guns for what I told her I paid for them

My advice is to avoid SS stuff like the plague when you are a novice collector. Start with Heer or Luftwaffe. Neil
Cap is real, but never was SS.
It is a white-top for the Reichsbahn (they utilized blue piping for their white-tops).
IMO, these are French made.
Reichsbahn white-tops are rare--I have seen them go for as much as $2500 US, so not a total loss.
He needs to find some matching Reichsbahn insignia; gold buttons; and a chincord.
Here is what it originally would have looked like (mine is for the lowest paygrades, hence the chinstrap)
