From past experience I'd always be careful with these caps as they are tircky to pin down to pre/post ww2 manufacture.

The reichsbahn caps were piped in red and didn't carry a wreath on the cap band. The eagle is good but not sure what branch of service the piping indicates.

It may be a postmans/officials cap from one of the various states circa 1920/1930's as the reichsbahn would have had a national cockade not a state one. the interior indicates an earlier cap rather than a later (post 1945).

    Hope this helps...

Thanks, guys for all of your help.
Spandau - thanks for all of the helpful information. It sounds as if you're suggesting I walk away from this one but, even if I do, both me and it would still be in my own house! Truth is, I already own it. It was part of a large collection that I bought. Some of the items have turned out good - others are duds. And some, like this cap, are a rare bird that is hard to pin down. At any rate, I've greatly enjoyed learning about these items of history and very much appreciate all of the help I've found here.

    Does it say Backerei?

It does! "Hans Hermann" "Backerei" The third word is illegible to me. If this is a baker's cap I'm gonna fall off my chair laughing

It looks like the third word is "Reichenschwand"
