any markings on the headband? I am surprised there is nothing there as the military examples I have seen always have markings on them.
the badge is 1950's, but the hat might be earlier, the carr aust popper is the same as the wwii type and might be wartime and early war they had the cloth trim, also the red brown vents are usually wartime but these can be faked by repainting them.

Makes it hard then.... i still say the pug is vietnam era, maybe added to an older hat to replace a missing felt band?

I have my grandfathers WW2 slouch hat here and will try to take some photos tomorrow for comparison.
