A friend recently bought this cap and as you all can see, there is a torn seam along the rear. The cap is a size 54 and I suspect someone has tried to wear it and caused this damage. Can any forum members suggest where to find correct period thread or does anyone do repairs prefessionally, as other than this torn seam the cap is in wonderful shape.

What a shame! It will be very laborious to resew this cap professionally as you would have to open the lining (in order to sew both lining and the fabric of the cap itself from the inside) and the seams to the right and the left of the seam at the back - and it seems these seams were sewn together with grey and not sand-coloured thread - and resew everything. This would show unless you chose to handsew the cap (which would also show unless you know how to do invisible mending. You might want to contact BenVK via "the other" page (as he was banned here), he seems to be a specialist for repairs and could give you valuable information.
The most practicable thing to do seems to be just to repair it by stitching both lining and the fabric of the cap very cautiously from the outside disguising as best as you can the torn open seams with thread in the colour of the original one without opening other seams.

The concern is that it will be visible however it is re-sewn. This hat seems to be in unissued condition other than the torn seam and I wonder if it is worth repairing or should it be left as it is. Any thoughts on the cap overall?

I'd simply put a stitch or two at the bottom, match the original holes on the outside.
Being such a small size the cost of professional restoration might not be worth it.
It would display fine, original thread would be a bonus.
    Nice hat.

I could restore it... but the cost of shipping would have to be worth it to you.

Damned shame, it’s a lovely cap.

I recall seeing a DAK Panzer officer’s mütze that was converted into a baseball-type cap once! A big arched hole and elastic stitched across the back... ****** criminal.
Why do morons with fat heads try to wear small hats?

    All the best,
