    Dear all

Could anyone possible decipher the wording stamped on the underside of an Infantry NCO's visor sweatband, please? Particularly the first word. So far, I think I can read '13/ I. (or is it a J?) R 88'

    Many thanks.

    Hi there.

I can't make out the first word, but the 13th Company was the Infanterie Geschütz Kompanie, so it could be an abbreviation of that.

Das Infanterieregiment 88 der 15. Infanteriedivision der Wehrmacht

    The rest reads -

    13./J.R.88 = 13./Kompanie Infanterie Regiment 88

The Germans would often use a J instead of an I in the abbreviation of Infantry.

    Kind regards,

    Will.

Thank you so much. Do you know where I might be able to find a little bit of information about that company's actions and whereabouts during the war?

    Hi Caroline.

    I am happy to help.

There is nothing specific I could find about the Company, but I found some general information about the Regiment and Division it was part of.

Infanterie-Regiment 88 was part of the 15. Infanterie Division.

    Germany (Sept 1939 - May 1940)

Forgive my ignorance, but what would that actually mean in the context of this hat?

It means that it's been inspected and approved for service use...

No matter! It means that the material office or the clothing store of the 13. Kompagnie of the 88. Infantry Regiment has checked the visor and thus released it for issue to a soldier.
