Last week I finally got the hat in. When unboxing the hat, my reactions were both positive and disappointed. Positive about the overall condition of the cap and disappointed with… .. the overall condition of the cap.
I can confirm the insignia, its replica. They have RZM 155/38 and 373/43. I had already taken this into account and this is unfortunate, but it does not surprise me.
What was not clear to me at the time of purchase is that the lining is completely loose and that the peak is broken / loose. The national emblem hangs completely horizontal. This is undesirable of course, and I suspect not easy to fix. Since this is not mentioned at the sale and is not clearly visible on the photos, the seller has indicated that I can send it back and get all costs reimbursed.
But I don't think I'm going to do this. The rest of the cap is good, and financially I still have some room to invest in the cap. I would actually like to return it to its original state as much as possible. But I can't do this myself, and the risk would be too great to make it worse.
So I called in the help of a specialist, who is recommended to me on this forum. And he has promised to help me with this.
So what I want to restore / repair is the following:
- Period correct and original insignia (my search)
- Put Peak upright again
- Reinstall the lining correctly
- Optional: make visor black again
This will take some time, but I'll keep you posted on the progress here. I can certainly use help in my search for suitable insignia. So if you have any suggestions, please let me know!
You're right- it does need new insignia and restoration, but it should come up very nicely. Can you get a partial refund for the fake insignia, to put towards getting a new set (around $1500)?
As I suspected the insignia was fake but the cap is real so if you got a decent deal you still did well. Insignia are easy to replace but not likely for $1500 anymore. the skulls alone are selling for that. I'm looking forward to seeing the end result. congratulations and good luck.
Perhaps I should be thankful that I have never really had any serious interest in acquiring either A-SS or W-SS headgear.
It's such a bloody minefield determining authenticity, especially with the insignia, but I am contiually amazed at how much one or both of the insignia cost, let alone a set!
Is $1500 plus now the going rate? If so, that it just insane, IMHO, for a small piece of stamped medal!
I just don't get it, and, on top of it, the visor caps are NOT rare.
BobS
Indeed BobS. These are insane prices. But ofcourse the result of supply and demand. As there are many fakes, that just don't get to the same quality and detail level of the originals, and just a few on the market of the original ones still in good shape. It's like the blood orders. Also just a metal pressed in a shape. But because of the limited amount and the story behind it, they to have become even more precious items then SS skulls. Ofcourse, there is silver involved, but still.
In my opinion it's even worse with the SS stahlhelm. These are much more simple in shape, have no detailing or craftmanship and are easy 4/6K with the correct stickers on it.
Prices are crazy for SS insignia, a TK with both prongs will be 1500 or more these days. I’ve watched the prices almost double in the last 3 or 4 years.
Interesting book btw by Andrew Reznik. I also purchased it. Good high quality pics to start a journey in the TK´s and birds. The prices listed in the book are already outdated though
many of those pics may be from this forum. There is no better source than here. I know Miguel's TK made an appearance in the book. Look up member Andrewr for posts in 2019. the forum should get residual fees for all the authentication that took place.
