Nice one Kradman, interesting that they have the UK style buttons.
I think the UK stole that from Canada, these where used in the 1970's on Parkas etc.
They where designed to work while wearing mittens or heavy gloves.
Which is very practice for here in Canada, we got 35cm of snow yesterday.

I think I first saw these in the early '80s and then mostly on private purchase kit in the "outdoors" sector on DPM kit aimed at the military such as windproof smocks etc. They then appeared on the
new generation of military issued kit around that time initially on special forces kit.
I don't really know the origin of them but they are referred to in the UK as "taped" buttons. If I had to guess I would say N. America but I suspect the actual origin to probably lost to time.
The larger ones seen on parkas and other cold weather gear are of course great for working in gloves but the same design appears in much smaller versions on temperate and desert kit.
The main advantage of taped buttons over the traditionally sewn types is that they are much less likely to come loose and be lost. The sewn type are increasingly less common now only appearing on items that will never be worn in the field with the taped style being entirely confined to field gear.
