My SS Wall

Article about: I have been collecting WWII militaria for one year now. Its a great way to bring history alive and in front of you. My first exposure to this time in our recent past was in college with a hi

For what it's worth, probably not in the East.

I can't read the last date in the above scan, but the SS-Dienstalterslisten tell us that was definitely still alive on 1st October 1944, when he was serving with the Befehlshaber der Waffen-SS in den Niederlanden.

He is seen in this photograph over on the AHF:

In my rummaging around on the web, I came up with a couple more photos of Heinrich that were in a "Germania" photo album.

Given the documents in his file and the interventions on his behalf by that of Demelhuber, Heinrich must have meant something to the Obergruppenführer...

Great to see some fetid woollens on the site again, they don't appear as frequently as they once did, unfortunately.
Thank you for posting your superb collection here.

Thank you for the kind words. Your collection is very nice, if memory serves me, you added the Lammers Mantel ex The Coleman Collection, yes?

KMD must have made quite the impression on his men. In photo albums of those who served under him, many include his photo and a photo of his grave- I've seen this on more than one occasion.

I stumbled upon these photos as I searched for the postings listed under Erich Heinrich's Dienstleintung.

Thank you for your interest. There was a nice and relatively early tunic for sale recently with all the nice early (I should say, not exactly the RZM labels one finds in tunics of say ca 1938) markings I adore. Had I not just gotten the SD tunic, or, rather had I not had to pony up a ton of dough for property taxes, insurance, and professional insurance and licensing fees, I would have snapped that one up, too. I hope to bring more woolens into the collection moving forward. Uncertain times in my field and in my country regarding paying our fair share to the taxman may just put a huge dent in my silly addiction to the foetid.

It is starting to get crowded along the one wall. Ultimately, I would like to expand the collecting room and get some museum cases along with risers for related items to go alongside the Montur.

For now, this will be the configuration

I recently picked up a copy of "The Order of the Deaths Head" by Höhne and began reading it. It was first published in 1969 and I did a quick search on the forum just to see the other member's opinions of it and if it still was relevant. A couple of posts came up with the author and this post by FB made me think. It made me think of how fortunate I have been to have corresponded with such an educated and gifted individual. I haven't the energy, nor am I able to dedicate the time to study at a level even slightly approaching that of FB, however, I have benefited greatly from his tutelage and generosity with his knowledge. It takes much effort, passion, and joy in education to do what he has done here. At some point, the efforts aren't worth the personal satisfaction and I can wholeheartedly understand stepping away. But, do read what he wrote in 2012, it is a glimpse into the thoughts and motivation of an educator and an individual with a passion that I wish the world had in greater abundance.

One thing is certain. This medium is far from an ideal way to secure the real knowledge central to the successful collection of SS regalia.
These images and the little bits of knowledge are always incomplete, and they cannot replace a real life time effort to master what is very complex.
The summer of 1969, I read all the books in English on the SS I could find, especially Reitlinger and Hoehne. With Hoehne in 1969, I made the decision to get a PhD, which then took me from that date until 1985.
That is, I spent my whole life with German history from the last years of high school through the beginning of my present assignment (which I began in the year I got my PhD), in which German history is also my full time job, that is, for almost twenty eight years since. German history was more or less my full time job from 1977 until the present, actually.
I began to collect in 1963, and could read German in the year 1972....and on and on. I even made a pilgrimage to London to meet Mollo in the summer of 1971. We had a long, interesting talk, the basis of a later correspondence. I even sold him an SS paratrooper smock as a favor, which availed me nothing. A typical disappointment. What's the price of it?
I am not the measure, but the foregoing has been my level of ambition in what is now almost five decades.
The effort and cost of my collection defy a price tag, either in time or its value in cash.
My experience is no prescription, no direction, no example. Young people have a totally different attitude to knowledge, history, the evidence, etc. I know, because such is my profession.
However, in a time where patience is not a virtue, how you figure it all out is really up to you. The snares and delusions of the present constitute no way ahead.
Also, I have no idea how much money I have spent on books and Nazi regalia since the 1960s, but the sum is considerable.
My experience has enabled me to play the role I do here, but it is a fluke of time and luck.....and more money and effort than most are willing to invest. Nor is the instant purchase for a seven figure sum by high rollers of a major collection and the recycling of the highlights of the Schiffer books much of an accomplishment in my mind.
Patrick Lewis, for instance, is somewhat the age in which I resolved to do this as a calling, but he will find a different universe of treasure, education, and so forth than did I. He can make more of it than I have, but the thing is not done in six weeks or six months, or with ten websites, or a hundred posts on these fora.
