WW1 is not my area, but it looks like a dress bayonet.
They was in the imperial period, nickel or chromed, with wooden handles.

If it was a S84/98 parade/dress version bayonet from the WW1 or post WW1 period we would expect nickel plating not chrome plating. The OP did say it was chrome which leads me to think his suggestion that a veteran had it done, possibly after WW2, is correct.
