2020 Pick Ups

Aldo reminded me again this year (2nd year in a row) that I forgotten to start a 2020 "Pick Up" thread. So here it is.

With Covid, it's been a heck of a year but I'm sure that despite local shows being cancelled, we have still managed to pick up items.

So? What did you get for the year? A lot or a little, doesn't matter. Just post it

And if a German Helmet happens to be in the mix, please post it over here as well

OK here we go. 2020 another spectacular year in collecting. I strove to scale down the skulls somewhat and focus on some fine SS caps which I managed to do. Expanded my SS cloth and some metal eagles to compliment my TK's. I maintained my Spanish collection throughout but strayed here and there with some miscellaneous had to have items. I have one last major purchase in transit, a Spanish Condor Legion pilot uniform grouping which I'll have to post later. Enjoy, Al

This was actually my first year ever of collecting WWII stuff (the year ain't over yet either), so I don't exactly have a lot of things, or things of exceptionally high quality, but I am happy to own most of everything. I want to get rid of any nazi party or civil items, and just go with German Army stuff.

My first ever German helmet, a ND CKL M42 Heer, with liner and a painted #77. Shown restored as well.

I bought this in March of this year, just seeing a swastika and eagle assumed it was an army something or other. I was a real novice then (still am). It's a really nice patch, but I would like to trade it for something else. I dunno.

This is a 76mm M339 AP-T shell that I got for free from a local gun dealer who didn't care to keep it.

relic conditioned battle damaged helmet, with tan camo paint remnants. Found in Italy.

Probably the highlight of my collection. Though in relic condition, this M40 Heer helmet still has the name of the soldier who wore it, Wilhelm Sasse. It, along with a tube of toothpaste, poison gas tablet container and L&SL40 Marked mess tin were all found in the same foxhole on the outskirts of Konigsberg Russia. Wilhelm went Missing in Action during the battle there.

Panzer Assault Badge in Silver, found in the positions of the 3rd Waffen SS division "Totemkopf", in the Demyansk Pocket.


Among other things, I got an SS Marked cartridge, a mint condition NSDAP badge (which I want to get rid of), a helmet shell that is now a M40 SS with removed whitewash look, and maybe some other things I'm forgetting.

Well, I tried to scale down the amount of pictures by taking group photos, but some items are still just single photos. This year has been my best year of collecting so far with some landmark collection items like my first helmet and first piece of cloth headgear. I focused on field gear mainly and tried to not get too many medals, but did pick up some medals to upgrade previous items. Next year I’m going to focus on medals, although I know I’ll get distracted occasionally. I only included my TR items as I also picked up some US stuff but thought I’d leave it out as it’s not my main area of collecting.


I tried to only pick up really good items, my favorites include these. A-Frame, Ex Winter camo gasmask can, Mint splinter mittens, mint early zeltbahn and it’s extras (thanks to Tom for the extras!), all the porcelain for dirt cheap, practice stick grenade, Splinter helmet cover, and my M42 officers cap.
