    Hello!
I am very interested in both the Waffen SS and the Wehrmacht but I was thinking of which is the best to collect?
The Wehrmacht stuff is more affordeble than the waffen ss but in a investing perspective which is best to collect?
Should I start a collection of waffen ss or wehrmacht if I see collecting as both a interesting hobby and as a investment?
    What do you think?

    Regards

If youre getting into collecting then stop thinking about investing.

Ask yourself if youre getting into collecting or trading.

From a financial standpoint, antiques like this will always raise in price across the years. Stuff breaks, goes missing etc.

The only observations I can make is that firstly you need very deep pockets to put together a reasonable SS collection. Secondly as the SS items are expensive they are also very much faked many of the fakes being of very good quality, therefore you should really know your stuff before spending your money.

Either area - pick one and learn it well. You are going to get stuck with some duds early on until you really get a handle on things. I'm lucky because I began collecting in 1975 when things were pretty affordable. It is much harder now to purchase anything with an eye towards investment. I would just enjoy the collecting aspect first and take care of what you obtain over time. NH

Yes agree. I dont want to trade, just collect. But if I buy things for 5-10$ + it is still in my interest that the value will hold and hopefully rise.

Yes very deep pockets indeed. But with a bit of saving it should go.

It is so hard to learn an area without being able to buy stuff. Even if I study books I think it is hard to see a diffrence beetwen quality fakes and originals.
Which dealer, prefareble in Europe do you guys recomend for buying original waffen SS?

Always get your items checked out here on the forums. Even the best sellers make mistakes.

And as I said, for most antiques, values always rise.
I dont know what you expect from this hobby, but as the others say, SS items are very expensive.

As a relatively new collector myself, please allow me to share some of my experiences when it comes to getting into the world of militaria.

As others have said, research is imperative. When building a collection, whatever you may choose to collect, it is important that your knowledge of the area scales with it. I'd say that knowledge is half of this hobby, the other being the objects themselves.

Start with the cheaper and common items as you ease yourself into it. That way if you get burned, it won't blow a hole in your bank account and you'll be less likely to throw in the towel. If you're ever even remotely unsure about an item, post it here first. Sometimes even if you're quite sure yourself that the piece is good, there are others on this forum with decades of experience who will be able to spot a dud in a heartbeat.

In the end you should only collect what interests you. Don't worry about finding a specialisation too soon, though. You'll find that it comes with time. As your collection ages, you'll start to refine it and narrow your focus.
If I had to make a suggestion, though, I'd advise you start with Wehrmacht items. Anything and everything SS has been faked the world over. Out of all the facets of militaria collecting, it's the area you're most likely to get burned in. To this date I have only one SS item, that being an SS-TV marked shell case. I simply lack the experience and confidence to wade into that particular area, although this forum will prove invaluable when I eventually choose to do so.

If you're just starting out, you really couldn't have come to a better place. The community here is fantastic, and in no time it'll become almost like a second family to you.

As long as you have a passion for the history behind these items, your interest in them will never die. Welcome to the world of 'the bug', Erik. Enjoy your stay.

    Best Regards, B.B.

    Thanks for your answer Brodiebartfast!
I am also a new collector and very egar to start.
I try to read as much as possible. I havent found some really good books yet. I want a book that not only shows original items but also points out were I can se if they are fake. I have folowed som threads here on the forum about fake tunics but for me as a novice it is hard to se the warningflags.
I agree with you that it is better to collect wehrmacht with both an economical and fake aspect but there is something special with the SS. There is very much mysteries around them.
My dream is to have some diffrent manequins with the complete uniform and all the compatequipment for both officers, NCOs and EM.
My historyinterest is big and allready this hobby have given me a lot.
Nowday I look at photos and movies diffrently. Like when reading a book.
    Regards
    Erik

Choose the area that really interests you. Not just a little, but really interests you.
Doing that will possibly keep you from getting bored with it a couple years down the road
and realizing you've spent a bunch of money on things you have no real interest in.

If you are collecting as an investment. Choose baseball cards and leave the militaria
to those of us with a passion for history.
