In respect of Sven Hassel, I read an interesting article a couple of years ago (can't remember what it was in) whereby somebody in Denmark (his nationality) had been doing some digging into his past and the accuracy of those books that we have all read when we were younger.
The writer was of the strong belief that Sven Hassel had not seen any active service during the war. I remember that this was backed up by some quite damming evidence. Again from memory, I think I am right in saying that the evidence indicated that he had been some form of Danish auxillery Police officer or prison guard, in Denmark, at the end of the war.
It was believed that he was then involved in the guarding of detained German troops and it was from their stories that the basis of his books was possibly found.
The article was detailed, lengthy and appeared to be written without bias.
The author had attempted to discuss his findings with Sven Hassel (who was still alive when it was written) but he refused, and when he did manage to confront him, found that he was very evasive and couldn't account for that damming evidence.
I was a little disappointed and a few days later took my whole collection of Sven Hassel books to the local charity shop.

I too grew up reading Sven Hassel's books. They are not true, just enjoyable pulp fiction novels.

Any other books from the German accounts of WW2? I think im going to be placing an order on Blood Red Snow sometime in the near future.

I just wanted to bump this thread up. I got my copy of Blood Red Snow in and I also made a complete list of books mentioned here (not every single book by the majority) here is the list incase anyone is interested in it but I know for sure after reading Blood Red Snow I will be going down the list and getting the rest of them in.

I just did a little bit of digging around and it appears that the book
Sniper on the Eastern Front: The Memoirs of Sepp Allerberger appears to be a much shorter english version of the real thing that is actually written by Sepp himself.
Does anyone have any more info on this?

Hi Guys, I have just been loaned a copy of "Adventures in My Youth": A German Soldier on the Eastern Front 1941-45 by Armin Scheiderbauer.
I will post a review once I have finished it.
