I place felt in mine for a classier look.

Todd brings up a great point..

To add some color to the backing, colored felt makes a nice background.. There are so many various felt colors you can pick colors that compliment the various branches..

I use wool in mine, as it is made from natural material, and there should be no issues with "out gassing".

Also is it safe to store photos in them without any covering other than the glass on the photos? Thanks for all the help
