My Uncle Charlie, the "Heebie Geebie Greek" on the BAR, C Co., 23rd IR, 2nd ID, went in with the second wave (yes, a small number of members of the 2nd ID landed on D-Day, tasked with protecting the Engineers). He slogged through the hedgerows, was on the attack on 7/11/1944 in the crucial battle for Hill 192, and fought in Brittany until grievously wounded on 9/14/1944 during the fighting in Brest. He earned 3 Purple Hearts, and a Bronze Star, but the only award he cared about was the CIB. He was buried with it in his hand. Jim G.
My American Grandfather was severely wounded on D-Day, shot through the hand and into the stomach while parachuting into France...He became a violent Alcoholic, neglected his family and killed himself -and his cousin- drunken driving in 1956...
