I cannot say anything about the second one, but the first one by Davies is a good book to learn from. I have it too.

Re: what do you think of these reference books?
Iv read the Warmans price guide book and found it good for a general over view of all things ww2 and has plenty of photos of militaria.
the down side is theres not much detail on each item and if you havnt got the latest edition the prices are outdated.
still it kept me occupied for a few hours

Re: what do you think of these reference books?
Hi Patrick.
Brian L Davis' book is a good all round reference book,
You wont go far wrong with it as a guide. (Like a lot of us on the forums, I've also got a copy)
If you can get a copy in good condition and at a fair price then go for it.
Like the others, I cant comment on Warmans price guide.
Regards etc

Try an internet search for the author Gordon Williamson. He has written some excellent reference books. Also, go to www.ironcross1939.com

Any books from here are excellent:
Ironcross 1939 - Home of B&D Publishing
Brian's book is excellent. An old book but still the "bible" as the best basic reference guide.
Cheers, Ade.
