Yes, the insurance inspector claims the con rod went through the engine block and the resulting oil leak ignited under the bonnet and caused the fire. Threfore they're offering me the price of the car based upon a ruined engine - £250, minus $150 excess = £100.
The fact I had driven it for nearly three miles before I could get to the hard shoulder despite the enging trashing itself escapes their notice.
The feral family!
Great pic!

Thought shall be the harder , heart the keener,
Courage the greater as our strength faileth.
Here lies our leader ,in the dust of his greatness.
Who leaves him now , be damned forever.
We who are old now shall not leave this Battle,
But lie at his feet , in the dust with our leader

In action on Isonzo front.....
Peugeot's have a long history of catching fire, the 309 was the worst, but I had a 405 that brewed up suddenly with only a few moments notice of smoke through the air vents. I managed to pull over and put it out with one of those crappy little fire extinguishers, a bottle of water and car blanket, so appearance wise nowhere near like yours!
Diagnosis was that the wiring loom shorted out and burned through the fuel pipe. No longer under warranty it was written off with me getting peanuts for it like you. Incredibly, 18 months later I saw it on the A41 pootling through Shropshire being driven by a postman!!
At least you, and Jerry and wife are o.k. that's all that matters in the reckoning, it's only a bloody car!!
All the best to you all, Ned.
'I do not think we can hope for any better thing now.
We shall stick it out to the end, but we are getting weaker of course, and the end cannot be far.
