1619930 John Victor Caunce a DEMS gunner of the Royal Artillery - when he was serving on the M V Diala in the North Atlantic it was attacked by U-553 and damaged on 15/1/42, she drifted and was eventually sunk by U-587 on 23/3/42 - Gunner Caunce is presumed to have died in the initial attack - several crew members stayed aboard and were picked up later (which would explain how his books were recovered) - some crew made it into rafts but were never seen again so if he was one of these his books would have been lost with him

Edwin Glendinning, this AB64 relates to his time in the ranks with 7th Hussar's during this time he was awarded the Military Medal, his Army Number was 552572, he was Commissioned as 190278 and continued to serve with 7th Hussars which was unusual as men were usually moved out of their Regiment on Commission to avoid awkward encounters with men they had served alongside. On 6/3/42 while he was travelling down a road near Pegu in Burma he passed near a tank battle involving other elements of his unit when he was incredibly unfortunate when his tank was hit by a stray round and he was killed. Coincidentally one of those killed in the main battle was Kevill-Davies whose letter to Trooper Spackman's (also 7th Hussars) family is shown earlier in the thread

2390014 Frank Sidney Goodwin of 30 Troop Carrying Company RASC, at some point between 12 and 19 December 1942 he was admitted to No1 Casualty Clearing Station at Djebel Halouf in Tunisia and on 26/12/42 he passed away, he is recorded as "died" so it was probably an illness which caused his death
