    With the Second World War and the constant increase in the number of victims, the need for doctors and nurses became greater than ever.

    Thousands of women volunteer their names and gaine entry into nursing schools all over the United States.

    Dorothy Carvalho, daughter of the Portuguese, Manuel Carvalho, was one of many Portuguese Americans, volunteers in the "Cadet Nursing Corps".

    Dorothy, from Massachusetts, entered the military service as a nurse in 1944.
