During the attack on the village of Kommerscheidt and Schmidt by the 112th Infantry Rgt of the 28th Infantry Division in November 1944 it was then 1lt Ray Fleig and his Sherman tanks that made the tricking journey down the Kall trail over the stream and up towards Kommerscheidt in support of the infantry. Fleigs tanks then we're in action against Panthers when the Germans made their counter attack.

Thought shall be the harder , heart the keener,
Courage the greater as our strength faileth.
Here lies our leader ,in the dust of his greatness.
Who leaves him now , be damned forever.
We who are old now shall not leave this Battle,
But lie at his feet , in the dust with our leader
