Just looking up his ships he was a submariner .
So an old seaman that looked like he was called back to active duty a few weeks before Dec 7th.

Looking up his ships he was first on a mine sweeper turned sub rescue boat . then he got into the subs and travelled to the Philippines and China. Some very cool early submarine history . Gary
