The base was activated in April 1942 and formally named an army air field in May. The field, one of the largest installations in the Western Technical Training Command, was established for training of air crew and ground mechanics to service B-17 Flying Fortress aircraft. From 1943 to 1945 basic training and special courses of instruction were conducted, and the school was later designated to train technicians and flight engineers for B-29 aircraft in addition to the B-17 technical training. Flying operations were also inaugurated.

Pasheilich is also in the training group. He and
I are to go to the show tonight. I'm glad (?)has
been having a lot of fun. I to have been
having my share of fun. Tell (?)to give
this address to my friends. He did not do
such a good job last time. Because most
of them said he did not tell them. I’ll
have to wait for a letter from my old address
from a friend then advise them of it. But
that takes to long. So please brother of
mine do it for your brother because letters from my friends will reach me quicker. You know to whom I have been writing. Well I don't have too much more to say so I will close. Im in a hurry again. Haha. When I get home I’ll be doing things so fast you wont know me from the old slow poke I used to be, but that’s the way the army builds you. I hope you can read my writing. Your son with love, Jim”
