Nice piece S98/05nAS anyway Erfurt production is not scarce, made up to 1916, mainly from delivered blanks. Someone cleaned the metall and damaged the grips by this.
Grips are original screws never been messed with .I have never polished it has patina. See other makers of sawback not to much erfurt arsenal my only sawback I own not many around Pennsylvania
Sorry to say, You probably not looked at the right grip around the lower screw there are evidently scratches around the bolt, and Erfurt as mentioned could be not declared as scarce maker, any of the production by them.
That specific area Andy, reminds me of burn marks. The scratches appear too irregular to be of mechanical origin. The other grip plate appears to have scratches that are more straight lines.
It appears the screw that holds the mouthpiece in the scabbard has half its head missing, is that just the picture?
Maybe there was combination, but the left grip is evidently scratched mechanically, and i believe the right grip could be burned and scratched both with burst vertically, yes You have a good eye the head of mouth screw is broken in one section.

It was scratched the wood evidently or burned some decades ago.
