British Pocket Knife Identification...

Hey Guys,

I picked up this small pocket knife at an antique mall in Florida a few months ago, but I'm not really sure what it is or if it is even military issue. It has roughly the same dimensions as a standard British jackknife, though it is thinner in profile and lacks a can opener, marlinspike and shackle. The only markings I can find say 'MADE IN SHEFFIELD'.

Does anybody know when this type of knife might date from? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Hi. I do not think it is military. I would say it is a civilian knife dating from the early part of the 20th century. Cheers.

In theory "made in" was introduced in the 1920's to suit US import laws, though in some cases it was introduced earlier. Lots of Service personnel bought their own little pocket knifes of this type and it could be a vet bring back or merely one sold in the US. A nice little knife in need of some TLC IMHO.

Thanks for the insight into the import aspect. I would like to clean up this knife, but I want to do it properly. Do you have any tips or links that might help me restore it correctly?

You are always going to struggle to get it really nice because of the pitting, but try some fine metal polish or very fine grade emery paper or wire wool and a little oil to seal it afterwards.
