These fireplace companion sets do show up in antique dealers and car boot sale from time to time but always seem to be missing a stand which was usually made in the same style. At the time the practice of making these was a very practical way of recycling military surplus of hundreds of these bayonets. After all, nobody wanted to buy old bayonets (?) but everybody had a coal fire so would have a real use for one of these besides ornamentation.
This was re-cycling before the word had been invented!!!
Looking at it from todays perspective as collectors it is a bit like the WWII German helmets re-worked into colanders, ladles and saucepans etc
I bet it was cheaper than three bayonets!
