BTW, you will also note that I have to add a substantial gusset, in order to get my leg into these Russian made boots. My calf muscles are much larger than the average Soviet citizen, because I have been riding since I was six.

Those heel caps/plates look a lot like German toe plates. If there is a number stamped somewhere near the two center nails, they are probably German WWII toe plates.

... The heel plates are heavily worn, but after a hard look under intense light I can say yes. One does have the barely evident remains of a number between the nails.
