Unfortunately, I can not read - too bright lighting, poorly visible letters.

Here´s a drawing I made of the visible markings on the lid. The last number is a bit uncertain though...

    5.Г 712 = might be 5th Guards 712th ?
    Пурин Р. Г. = might be a name Purin, R. G.

That's about all I can make out, sorry...

    Cann't read. Very feustrating!
How thick is it? How heavy?
You called it "a lid". Why? Is the back side flat?
Itis not completely symmetrical in shape, so it is a hand made. In this case the writing can be custom and not standard.

The metal plate is around 3 mm:s thick and the size is approx 35 by 35 cm:s.

The rim is bent leaving a 2 cm twist to the edges.

The edges show signs of welding or possibly sealing with some kind of metal (possibly lead?). I just got back home from the excavations, I will try to clean it a bit more and take better pics in a couple of days. Thanks for the interesT

    Best, Jan

Jan, we should be able to crack it!
I think if we manage to read at least one word, we can will inderstand the rest.
I think there is "ШТ." which is a common Russian abbeviation for ШТУКА (a piece).
But just a thought, what if the text is not in Russian? We just have to be open for such eventuality.

Also referred to here as "batch number" - "Н Парт"
Maybe it's some kind of ammo/ explosive packing?

If I see something similar, I'll write here.
