A very recent find on eBay... a 1943 dated Director No 7 Mk IV. Everything works as it should, optics are bright - although there are specs of dust on the prism. The sight has the later post-war tripod head mount which allowed for more precise levelling of the instrument. These instruments were used for orienting and aiming field artillery, and many were still in use up to at least the 1980's. These days many of them tend to get stripped back to bare brass and then highly polished - which is a shame really. This example was being advertised as a: 'Military Theodolite', which technically speaking it is... but by giving it such a title it reduced the amount of potential buyers that would spot it, and it appeared under the banner heading of 'Surveyors Instruments'. The starting bid was set at £30, and with about an hour to the end of the auction someone made the first bid. I put a killer bid in with just two seconds to go, and to my complete surprise I won it for just £31... This is certainly one that slipped under the radar of military collectors!
Cheers,
Steve.
