Default British Gas Mask bag VII 1942 metal fitting

My gas mask bag has a grey metal circular fitting on one side but I have not been able to work out its purpose.
It is not a ventilator as these are in bras and on the bottom of the bag.
    Any suggestions ?
    Thanks.

The grey metal fitting on the side is for tying the gasmask around the body to hold the case onto the front of the body for preparation to wear. Not often seen as the loop and cord is often broken or removed over time.

Thanks for the explanation. So now I see why the other side has a small pocket with some string in it. I know this bag came from a stock of unissued therefore unused.
But now will be used as an accessory on my RAF marked jeep.
