I am wondering if these could have used on a large 'mud-map' to indicate unit positions. In Australian (and British?) map marking parlance, two dots = Section, two bars = Battalion. Bit hard to imagine someone breaching a mine field fiddling about to get the right marker.

So I understand that these were not used for marking mines after the battle but on a mud map?

These were used for marking mines, but sometimes other uses were found too. If they were painted to mark mines then I would expect to see something soldiers could understand like "A/T" -anti tank, or "A/P" -anti personnel but the colours and symbols make me think of units, sections and brigades. When a 'mud-map' has to be created on exersize the soldiers just take what ever they can find.

Sounds logical. Interresting though. Thx
