m1a2 1944 Any Idea ?

In a box full with WW1 stuf i Found this "thing".....

First I thought logical ( wrong ) that it would be also ww 1 stuff but at the back there is 1944 which makes it no way ww1

On de bottom there is a date ( easy ) 1944 and a text M1A2 which according to friend Googa is a tank...... clearly this thing does not even look like a tank..... Which makes me even more wonder what this is... due to the m1a2 i guess that it is a US something thing...... can be wrong
So if anyone can give me some idea what it is i would be thankfull
