Odd US signal corps speaker

Hello gents,

I am helping an elder Friend sell bits of his collection to raise money for his ridiculous health expenses and i need help identifying this odd squak box. It SEEMS to be dated September 1944, but I have no idea what it is. A very careful search through my reference books couldn’t turn up anything either.

Is it some odd piece of field gear, or maybe a single part of a large equipment set

Could it be a microphone for a flight helmets oxygen mask , I have a similar one for use in an RCAF oxygen mask.

Thanks CBH, but this seems to be a little large for an oxygen mask.
I am wondering if it was meant to attach to your field gear straps or something like that. The lift-the-dot fastener on the strap material seems to function in that way.
