Yes, it's a US Army Map case... I've got 2 of them from the 60s-70s Vietnam era...Very Practical piece of gear...

Yes, your guess is correct. A U.S. M1936 map case, in the mid- to later-war O.G. colour, though with a modification; the original shoulder strap has been removed and the small, handgrip riveted on in its place.

The pouch is an American m1956 (m56) first aid/compass pouch as used during the Vietnam war. From what I have seen they were normally attached to the suspenders.
