I have had a few of these in the past I even used one for most of my service time as I think the Stainless steel is better than the aluminium Brit tins. This one has an odd handel that I have never seen? It is dated 1941.

It is similar to a world war I pattern mess tin. I'll post pictures of my world war I us mess tin in a little bit.
US forces used alot of WWI type gear until 1942 when they started to replace the WWI style.

Yes, it is a hold-over design from early supplies just before the US got involved in WWII. I actually used one just like this in Army basic training in the 70's.
