The 1st Kompanie of Pioniere Ersatz Bataillon 12 was formed from men from Pionier Ersatz Kompanien 75 in November 1939. For what ever reason it was decided to commemorate this on the ekm.

Can't see any "M" on this both tags.
You can see the m on the top EKM, the first letter on the far left.
My assumption is that the "M" stands for mobilised. In May 1944 the 1 Kompanie was mobilsed. I see no other explanation for this. So the zinc ekm dates from May 1944 onwards.
Thank you for your answer. The m can also stand for M : : römische Zahl für 1000(M) : Magenkrankem : mittleres or Marsch or maybe motorisiert(mot) What you call a zinc ekm is a steel/magnetic one stainless steel.
Sorry Daarom, I didn't look that closely at the material it was made from.
