I see HPO which doesn't stand for a unit that I am aware of. I've never seen a tag so faintly stamped that wasn't in a state of decay.

Do you believe it to be an original tag? I'll try posting more pictures of the tag, when looking in hand it's definitely a 6

The "??" Looks like an "R"
"Please", Thank You" and proper manners appreciated

I read this as two lines.

    Top line is 255.

Bottom line is HP6 / 1R5 with the "0" being his blood type

I don't study these tags at all, nor German unit designations but could HP stand for some type of Hospital unit?

Fits in that he was a medic of some sorts

It may indeed be a 1, I'll look very closely tomorrow morning. And yeah, I think O is his blood type. But I'm not sure on how they're read either

Very hard to read indeed. Maybe you can rub some chalk in the stamping, it might help to read it.
And I don't think it says HPO or HP6, this wouldn't make sense.
    I'm not 100% sure but I see this: II P 6./ I R 5
That would stand for II Bataillon, 6. Kompanie, Infanterie Regiment 5.
The weird thing is the P. Don't know if it is a P and why it is there, it messes the whole thing up for me.

I do agree with the rollnumber 255 and bloodtype O.
I'll wait for more photos and see if we can clear this one up for you.

    Regards, Rik

This is the best my camera can make out. But, I was able to read the other half better in direct sunlight.
