    Default Stalingrad dug Erkennungsmarke

Here are some pics of German dog-tag that my friend dug near Stalingrad. I believe the inscription stands for:
1st Company Nachricten Abteilung 297 and the 33 would be the number of the individual soldier in that unit?
This unit was part of the 297 Inf. Div. and it was found in the positions held by that division (southern part of the "Kessel".)
How can I find out the individual soldiers name who was issued this tag and what happened to him?
    Tks, Bob

    Hi Ade:
Thanks for your reply. I was not aware that this type of information would not be released by German Govt. I would be more than happy to give this piece to this
soldiers family if I only knew who he was.

    Tks, Bob

You could always offer it to the Deutsche Volksbund or the WASt, but they haven't the funding to collect remains that are found for identification and familial notification, so I don't know if they'd have the ability to simply return Erkennungsmarken... can't hurt to ask though

Matt the Volksbund are not interested in Erkennungsmarke and even on those that are recovered from MIA's all they require are the tag details plus photographic evidence of the tag to ID the soldier, the tag itself they are not bothered about recovering or returning to families.

The Volksbund will cover the cost of recovering the remains and a formal reburying in a Deutschesoldaten Friedhof,
