Trying to date the 32mm 'M39' stars that appeared between the pre-war two piece construction and the post-war type with fatter 'rays' is a sure fire way to lose your mind.

I don't believe there is evidence based consensus on dating such stars on English or Russian speaking internet.

So many tiny variations in enamel, fixtures, quality of metal, workmanship, hammer and sickle shape...

I agree that the orange hue is usually associated with pre-war, but more 'red' stars can also be found from that period.

    Good luck!

Thank you very much for your contribution. Indeed, it is difficult to judge the nuances of color, red or orange-red, especially after so many years! It takes some experience and on this forum there are experienced specialists who have the courtesy and friendship to answer questions; this is how everyone can progress in this vast and complicated field!
    Sincerely,
    Jack

Hello friends, and thank you bruno for this new contribution and this photo which makes it possible to shade the orange red compared to the more intense red. It also seems to me that the strong red is more "transparent", less matt than the orange-red. Very interesting subject anyway!

    Thanks Jack

The qualitye of the left one is very good. I "guess" the quality decreased during the war.
I am not a specialist in enamel but maybe a little less pigment?
But still to be confirmed as i found no evidence of this
Also red one are "easier" to find the the Red-orange ones

And I just realise I forget the M47 (Not mine unfortunatly).
Note the chape of the sickle that is less rond than the M39 and M56

Indeed, it is quite characteristic, the shape of the sickle is less rounded. It also looks like the star is stamped in white metal instead of yellow. Is that an impression, but it also seems to me that the mass of the hammer is smaller than on the model 39. All that is very interesting to learn!
    Thank you Bruno

    Hi Jack

I unfortunaltly do not own this one but if I refer to the 22mm one it is yellow like the others.
Yes the hammer is also smaller
