Default M16 gasmask (Ramenmaske) with canister -Real??

    Hi everyone,

Just got my M17 german gasmask and now I come across an M15 or M16 model. It looks original, but what worries me is that the white cloth is still very white. Also the unit markings are clear and the rest of the paint is gone. What is the function of the cloth the mask between filter and mask? I've seen this one or twice but most of the masks don't have this.

Looks like a good one to me. It's been stored somewhere damp, going on the condition of the base of the filter. The canister looks fine, too.

The white cloth appears to have been cut down or torn off. Originally, it would form a kind of shroud around the filter. According to a user on the Great War Forum: ''This was either used to attempt to reduce the amount of gas coming in contact with the filter, or simply to protect the fragile mask from wear when rattled around in the can.''

    Regards, B.B.

Agree with Brodie and Tony - all good. You have to remember that the cloth and markings may not have seen the light of day for over a 100 years and thus are much better preserved than the exterior of the can and these things have a very good seal to them as well. Lovely naming on the lid! This is a nice example.

I didn't win it. I was outbid in the auction. Lucky winner. Maybe he/she will post it on the forum.
