Hamburg and Centenar Medaille. A veteran soldier…
Hamburg Hanseactic Cross, Ehrenkreuz für Frontkämpfer 1914-1918 and Kaiser Wilhelm Zentenarmedaille 1897
The Hanseatic Cross of Hamburg was instituted on September 10, 1915, as a decoration for military merit. It ceased to be granted in 1918.
The Ehren Kreuz des Weltkrieges was instituted in 1934 by Marshal Paul von Hindenburg, being Reichspräsident; as a commemorative decoration of the War of 1914-1918 to reward those who took part in it.
The Zentenarmedaille was instituted in 1897 by the Kaiser, William II, as a commemoration of the centenary of the birth of his grandfather, the Kaiser William I; as a general decoration awarded, among others, to the active military on March 23, 1897.
Thus, the owner of this ribbon bar, in 1897 was at least a recruit, so assuming he was about 18 or 19 years old, he must have been born around 1878 or 1879.
At the outbreak of the First World War, in which he participated and was decorated by the City of Hamburg, he would be about 35 or 36 years old. And in 1934 he was already, at least, a veteran of about 55 or 56 years…. Like me today!!
As you all know, the Zentenarmedaille was awarded on March 22, 1897, on the Hundred Anniversary of the birth of Kaiser Wilhelm I, to all the military in active service and to the veterans of the Wars of 1864, 1866 and 1870.
It was made by melting Danish, Austrian and French cannons, captured in those wars. It was designed by the artist Walther Schott (1861-1938) and produced by the Berlinian firm of medal manufacturers L. Ostermann.
