Default Hamburg veteran with his ribbon bar and a little story

Today we will see the photograph of a veteran and his wife on which I have placed a triple ribbon bar with the Hanseatic Cross of Hamburg (Hanseatenkreuz, Hamburg) just like the one in the photograph.

A careful look allows us to discover this detail:

The name of the photo studio die-cut in the lower left corner of the image:

    HEINR. MAHLER
    HAMBURG-ALTONA

Altona, district located in the western part of the Hanseatic city of Hamburg with about 270.000 inhabitants (2016). For several centuries it was an independent city (1664-1938), but on April 1, 1938 it was incorporated into Hamburg by the Greater Hamburg law (Groß-Hamburg).

Looking at the image, I imagine that many times our veteran soldier in the photo would go with his wife to the Fish Market for some fischbröchten and beer.

But on the same bank of the Elbe, next to Altona is the neighborhood of St. Pauli.

There, are the docks of the Clock tower for large passenger ships, like the famous Wilhelm Gustloff in this postcard, which I photograph next to the portrait.

Well, a few hundred meters away inland is the Reeperbahn Strasse in the heart of St. Pauli.
I suppose if one night when he was younger, the man in the portrait came up to the Reeperbahn in St Pauli, he surely never went with his wife ...

In this Art Deco poster from the 1930s, we already see everything that St. Pauli night had to offer.

It seems that things have not changed much.

    Cheer up friends.
The times will return to enjoy with the comrades a beer or a wine and a good meal. In the meantime, let's enjoy our hobby.

Default Veterans and their ribbon bars of WWI (9)

Today we will see the photograph of another veteran.
First Lieutenant (Oberleutnant) on which I have placed a triple ribbon bar with the Bavarian Military Merit Cross (Militär VerdienstKreuz, III Klasse. Königreich Bayern) just like the one in the photograph.

Shoulder strap and collar tabs indicates the rank of this man.

It seems clear that the central ribbon of the ribbonbar is the Bavarian Military Merit Cross, III Class with Swords.

A triple bavarian ribbon bar from my collection

As we all know, Bavaria was a German kingdom (Königreich Bayern) located in southeastern Germany. One of the four Kingdoms that integrated the German Empire.

    Default New Reuss + Sudeten

    New ribbon bar

    My Kaiserreich ribbon bar collection

EK2.1914 + Princedom of Reuss, Medal of Merit with Swords + Hindenburg Cross with Swords + Medaille zur erinnerungen del 1 Oktober 1938 (Sudetenland)

It is a quadruple ribbon bar of a WWI veteran decorated for his value by the Empire, with the Iron Cross; and also, by the Princedom of Reuss, with the Golden (or Silver) Medal of Merit with Swords. In 1938 he participated in the military occupation of the Sudetenland and was awarded with the commemorative medal of that territorial annexation.
