Looks good, I like the looks of the Butcher's
But when I zoom in it looks like the handle was dipped in shellac,
Might be a wax or Might just be the pic's.

Oh so that what it is...
You are right that the hilt seems to have been dipped in what I thaught was thick brown grease. Using a tooth pic from my Swiss army knife I was as to scrape off some of it, but for now it's not causing any problems.
I've wiped down the bayo with mineral spirits before coating with renesence wax, but is anybody aware of a good means to remove shellac?
Tidy example of an S 98/05 n.A. revised model. Yes, seems someone has used shellac on the hilt, may be possible to remove. I'm drawn to the scabbard which is in faultless condition, many we see are not. Little evidence of a bayonet being drawn around the throat, so it's either a mint NOS scabbard or maybe a reproduction.
Hi all, thanks for your comments.
I've learned that denatured alcohol can be used to remove shallac which I shall try. In the meantime I'll leave it alone as it seems like an attempt to preserve the bayonet from many years ago.
One thing that drew me to the bayonet was the condition of the scabbard because it has plenty of blueing. Whilst the pictures don't show it completely you do areas of rust here and there including a semi circle of rust where it was on contact with a leather frog. however it is free of dents and shows no pitting.
