It is a WW1 German helmet.
The 64 stands for it's size.

Hello-I believe this is an M16 Stalhelm as worn by German and Austro-Hungarian troops in WW1 and for many years after- the 2 lugs on the sides are for mounting an armoured shield protecting the face for trench warfare-usually MG crews-the helmets were often painted in 'Dazzle' type colour schemes.

If you repaint it, you will kill the value and collector desirability.

    "ET" is the maker.

    Cheers, Ade.

klinger, they are all correct, Model 1916 steel helmet shell, 'ET' is maker mark for ' Eissenhuttenwerk Thale, Thale/Harz', the '64' is the size of the shell, they made the M16 in size 60-68, and were one of the most prolific makers of the German steel helmet during WW1. Value, im afraid not a lot, approx £40, it appears to have been reworked, the extra holes in the side of the helmet are for a later applied liner of some sort. M16's used by the Finnish after WW1 had these extra holes, originals had only three, one at the back and one on each side. I think it best, left as it is.
