Regarding the first picture with a captured MG, there is also a captured cuirass frontal plate there! I own a french cuirass front plate that i aquired directly from a relative of the owner. He had it together with an Prussian Cavalery saber.
I always imagined it could have been a captured example, this picture may make the theory more likely, especially as both miss the back plate - maybe to heavy and not good looking enough to carry it from the battlefield?
