WW1 New Zealand soldier's remains found and reburied with honours.
An appropriate story for ANZAC Day.
A New Zealand born soldier who died in World War 1 and whose remains were found in 2016 were reburied recently at the Commonwealth War Graves cemetery at Ypres, Belgium.
Captain Henry John Innes Walker of Auckland had enlisted with the Royal Warwickshire Regiment at the start of the war in 1914. He died leading an attack on German trenches during the second battle of Ypres in Belgium on 25 April 1915. Captain Walker was found with the buried remains of six other soldiers, who remain unidentified, but one is known to also be from the Royal Warwickshire Regiment. Personal objects found with Captain Walker's remains enabled him to be positively identified.
At the internment of the remains family members from New Zealand and Australia attended.
An interesting fuller account with photos is on the NZ Herald website.
