very nice example, and you were told correct. As far as I know they are quite sought after, I seen one on ebay sell for £1500 a while back!
Yes a very nice piece, I've never seen one close up only in books and at the Imperial War museum. The idea was to protect the face from splinters from the face hardened amour plate used on WWI tanks, the impact of the bullets hitting the outer face of the plate steel would send localised shock waves through the steel and thus knock chips of the inside face of the armour due to the centre of the steel being soft
Nige.
"Now, I've designed this like a collapsing bag ! "
Wow that is a great item.
One of these days, I'll add one to my Tank Corps collection...

OK. On the back burner for now....
I still need to add an Air Service Pilot's uniform to the collection
(focus, Chuck...focus...)
They are rare but do turn up in the UK quite often. A well known militaria dealer here has one with out the tapes and is asking £1350 approx for it. I dont think they are worth that kind of money.
I paid £280 for mine ten years or so ago...phew!!
