Not sure if it is me, but are the hat insigina is suppose to be like that? Looks.....flat. Where did he get this? The origin could help. I have never seen a cap like this, the insignia is like this: A hat guy can give you a most definite answer.

I hope you don't believe that this is an original Luftwaffe officer's cap. It is a postwar West German Luftwaffe enlisted ranks cap, with repro WWII insignia.
